The granite islands offer far more adventure than their beach image suggests: forest trails over the mountains of Mahé, reefs and granite dive sites offshore, sheltered bays for paddling, and a car-light island made for cycling. Conditions depend heavily on the season and the wind, so the best adventure activities change through the year. This guide outlines the main options and how to approach them safely.

Six adventure activities in Seychelles

1. Hiking

Mahé has the best trail network, mostly inside Morne Seychellois National Park: Copolia and Morne Blanc climb through forest to granite viewpoints, and the coastal path to Anse Major leads to a secluded beach. On Praslin, Fond Ferdinand offers guided walks, and on La Digue the climb to Nid d’Aigle gives views across to Praslin. Start early, carry water and use a guide for longer or less-marked routes.

2. Diving

Licensed dive centres operate on the main islands and some resort islands, with granite reefs close to shore and deeper sites for experienced divers. The calmer transition months usually bring the best visibility. Bring your certification and choose a centre affiliated with a recognised training agency.

3. Snorkelling

The marine parks — Ste Anne off Victoria, Port Launay and Baie Ternay on Mahé’s west coast, and the waters around St Pierre and Curieuse off Praslin — are the best places to start. See Seychelles Snorkelling & Diving.

4. Sea kayaking and paddling

Sheltered bays and marine parks suit kayaks and paddleboards in calm conditions. Some operators offer guided kayak trips, including clear-bottomed kayaks in the Ste Anne Marine Park. Stay close to shore and check the wind forecast.

5. Cycling on La Digue

La Digue is made for bicycles: a flat west-coast road, steep climbs inland and quiet lanes to the east-coast beaches. Hire bikes in La Passe and ride carefully on narrow roads.

6. Fishing

Sport fishing trips run from the main islands, and some outer islands are known for fly fishing. Choose operators that follow catch-and-release and local regulations.

Adventure safety in Seychelles

Currents, swell and wind change with the trade-wind seasons. Swim and snorkel only where local advice says it is safe, use licensed operators for diving and boat trips, and carry water and start early on mountain trails. Trails can be slippery after rain, and some coastal routes are exposed to the sun.
