The Outer Islands are the coral islands and atolls that lie far from the granitic inner islands, scattered across the western Indian Ocean. They are low-lying, sparsely inhabited and reached by light aircraft rather than ferry.

Aldabra Atoll, one of the largest raised coral atolls in the world, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its giant tortoises; it is not a conventional holiday destination. Elsewhere, a small number of islands host remote lodges. This guide lists outer-island accommodation only when an exact listing exists with an approved booking partner.
